Futsal Catch-Up Rule: Handicap the Leader
A futsal game in which any team leading by two goals must play with a handicap until the other team gets closer. Students discuss whether it's fair while practicing respect for weaker opponents, balanced competition and tactical adjustment.
How to play
- Make 4 teams of 6 on two courts with goals; the extra student keeps scores and the cards.
- Prepare handicap cards: play one player down, shoot only with the weaker foot, goals count only after five passes, or no goalie.
- Play 7-minute games, rotating the goalie after every goal.
- When a team leads by two, it draws a card and plays with it until the gap drops to one.
- After each game (3 rounds, 21 min), the winning teams share which handicap made them think the most.
- Wrap-up (3 min): discuss whether the handicap is fair and when real sports use something similar.
Rules
- No celebrations that humiliate opponents.
- The handicap starts immediately, with no complaints.
- Players call their own fouls.
- Safety: no tackles from behind and no shots within 2 m (6 ft) of the goalie.
Variations
Easier
Handicap only when the gap reaches three goals.
Standard
Handicap at a two-goal lead until the gap is back to one.
Harder
Handicaps stack if the gap keeps growing.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: goalie with a smaller goal, or a pivot player with a protected zone.
- Autism: picture cards, and rule changes announced with a visual signal.
- Beginners: their goals count double and they get 2 seconds unpressured when receiving.
Learning goals
- Reflect on equal opportunity in competition.
- Adjust tactics to changing rules.
- Show respect for opponents when winning.
Equipment for a class of 25
- futsal balls: 2
- goals: 4
- pinnies: 12
- cards: 8
Teacher tip
Start with balanced teams so the handicap doesn't always land on the same group. Ask the trailing team how the change felt.
