Futsal: 3-1 Offense with Pivot Rotations
Students learn the futsal 3-1 offense: one defender in the back, two wings and a pivot (target player) up top. They practice the basic rotations (parallel and diagonal), supporting a pivot with their back to goal and filling space intelligently.
How to play
- Make teams of 4 plus a goalkeeper; use cones to mark the four 3-1 spots in the attacking half (defender in the middle, wings on the sidelines and pivot near the box).
- Rotations with no defense (5 min): the back player passes to a wing and follows down the line (parallel) or cuts across to the far side (diagonal); the wing fills the back spot.
- 4-on-2 plus goalkeeper (5 min): two defenders try to win the ball while the offense must complete one rotation before shooting; swap defenders every 2 minutes.
- 4-on-4 game with goalkeepers (12 min): a goal off a pass from the pivot is worth 2; a goal after a full rotation is worth 2; anything else is 1.
- Every 4 minutes the resting teams come in after observing with one question: who filled the back spot after each turnover?
Rules
- The pivot can't enter the goal box or charge the goalkeeper.
- Tackles are made on your feet; no slide tackling.
- Kick-ins from the sideline are taken with the foot within 4 seconds, as in school futsal rules.
Variations
Easier
The defense plays a passive zone and the offense has a neutral player who always joins the team in possession.
Standard
4-on-4 with goalkeepers and bonus points for rotations and passes to the pivot.
Harder
Teams must shift from 3-1 to a 4-0 with no pivot when the teacher calls "four across," then back to 3-1 on the next call.
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility can play goalkeeper or play the back spot with a 6-ft protected zone where no one can pressure them.
- For students who are hard of hearing, use different colored pinnies for each spot and visual signals for the rotation.
- Students with lower fitness can use rolling substitutions every 2 minutes.
Learning goals
- Fill the spots of the 3-1 system while keeping defensive balance.
- Run parallel and diagonal rotations to create space.
- Use the pivot as a target for support passes and finishing.
Equipment for a class of 25
- futsal balls: 3
- pinnies: 15
- goals: 2
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
At first they forget the back spot and get countered: give a bonus point for winning the ball back right away. Rotations click faster if you walk them first.
