How to play

  1. Setup (2 min): on each half court, a 4-yd channel along the sideline marked with cones, a goalie and groups of 6 in pinnies: 3 attackers, 2 defenders and 1 waiting.
  2. Explanation (1 min): two attackers play inside the channel against two defenders; the third waits outside the area and may only enter once the ball reaches the end line.
  3. Game (5 min): attackers try to reach the end of the channel and play a cutback or a ball to the far post; a goal by the late runner is 2 points, a goal straight from the channel is 1 point.
  4. Defense: if the defenders win the ball, they pass to a teammate at midcourt for 1 point.
  5. Rotation (5 min): after each attack, one attacker becomes a defender, one defender waits and the waiting student enters as the late runner; switch wings halfway through.
  6. Competition (4 min) and wrap-up (1 min): add up points by group and talk about when the runner arrived on time.

Teacher tip

Runners often arrive before the ball and stand still: teach them to slow down and burst late. Use different-colored cones for the end zone of the channel.
