Futsal: 2-2 Zone Defense and Switching Marks
In futsal, teams defend in a 2-2 box in their half of the court, passing on and picking up marks when an attacker moves from one zone to another. It is then compared with man-to-man defense so students can reason through the pros and cons of each system.
How to play
- Mark the four zones of the 2-2 box on the court with cones and explain the switch: the player letting go says yours and the one picking up says mine (3 min).
- 4v4 drill without shooting: attackers rotate across zones and defenders practice passing on and picking up at walking pace (5 min).
- 4v4 game with goalkeeper: mandatory 2-2 zone defense and goals allowed from anywhere (7 min).
- 4v4 game with goalkeeper using man-to-man defense, comparing goals conceded and steals with the previous game (7 min).
- Team discussion: when would you pick zone and when man-to-man? (3 min).
Rules
- Every switch is called out loud; without a call, the mark stays with the original defender.
- No slide tackles or contact from behind.
- The goalkeeper rotates every game and wears gloves.
- Waiting teams stand behind the sideline, more than 2 m back.
Variations
Easier
Only two attackers cross zones while the other two stay put.
Standard
Four free attackers against the 2-2 zone and then against man-to-man.
Harder
Attackers may set screens without contact and the defense must decide whether to switch or chase.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: the switch is signaled with a light tap on the shoulder or a hand signal.
- Limited mobility: acts as coach and records steals and goals conceded for each system.
- Autism: always given the same zone of the box and a simple cue: do not leave anyone alone in your zone.
Learning goals
- Defend in a zone by passing on and picking up marks.
- Compare defensive systems using data from the game.
- Communicate clearly and cooperatively on defense.

Teacher tip
The comparison data is the best tool for the final discussion: write it on the board or a phone so nobody argues from memory.
