Fun Run Rehearsal: Start Corrals, Bibs and Finish
A full rehearsal of race day at a fun run so students know what to do if they sign up for one: picking up the bib, doing their own warm-up, lining up in the corral for their expected time, a staggered start, a water station and the finish. Part of the group organizes and the rest run, then they switch.
How to play
- Assign roles for the first half: organizers (paper bibs, corrals, a simulated water station and timing) and runners; each runner states their expected time for 2 kilometers (4 min).
- Runners pick up their bibs, do a 4-minute self-led warm-up and line up in the right corral, marked with colored pinnies and cones (6 min).
- Corral starts 20 seconds apart and a 2-kilometer run with a simulated water station, where students practice grabbing the cup without stopping; at the finish, organizers record times in order of arrival (12 min).
- Switch roles with a short 1-kilometer version for the second group (10 min).
- Group share: what common mistakes did we see (starting too fast, lining up in the wrong corral, stopping at the water station) (3 min).
Rules
- Each runner lines up in the corral for their expected time, not their friends': that way no one blocks others or gets run over.
- Slow down at the water station and don't toss anything outside the marked area.
- At the finish, keep walking through the chute so you don't stop the runners behind you.
- Finish times aren't posted: each runner gets their own.
Variations
Easier
A single 1-kilometer lap for everyone with no water station.
Standard
A 2-kilometer rehearsal with corrals, a water station and a finish, with a role switch.
Harder
Organizers also prepare an incident plan (a runner who feels faint, a blocked crossing) and rehearse it during the race.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: starts from a dedicated corral at the front, as in many fun runs, or takes on coordinating the start.
- Visual impairment: runs with a guide, and both wear an identifying pinnie, as in official races.
- Autism: gets a script of the full race-day sequence to anticipate each stage.
Learning goals
- Understand how a real fun run works.
- Manage one's own pace and starting position based on a realistic expected time.
- Take on organizing roles responsibly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- worksheets: 30
- pinnies: 30
- cones: 20
- stopwatch: 3
Teacher tip
If there's a local fun run coming up, use its course or rules as a reference for the rehearsal. Use reusable or recyclable cups for the water station.
