Frozen Tableaux Storytelling
Groups of five tell a story in three frozen pictures (beginning, conflict, and ending) using their whole bodies and different levels, and the audience interprets what is happening. Students work on group composition, expressing emotions, and using levels and planes.
How to play
- Spend 2 minutes explaining a tableau: a body photo with high, middle, and low levels and every face focused on something specific.
- Creative warm-up (3 minutes): the teacher calls a place (beach, hospital, end of a game) and, on a count of 5, groups silently form the picture.
- Each group draws a card with a story title, such as "The Lost Bus," and creates three tableaux: beginning, problem, and resolution (6 minutes).
- Rehearse transitions: between tableaux, the group moves in slow motion over 4 counts called by the teacher (2 minutes).
- Performance (5 minutes): each group shows its three tableaux, 5 seconds each; the audience guesses the title and explains what they saw.
- 2-minute reflection: which details made the story easiest to follow?
Rules
- Any contact between classmates is gentle and agreed on beforehand.
- No one climbs on anyone, and no unstable supports are used.
- In each tableau, the whole group stays completely still.
- The audience stays quiet until the group finishes.
Variations
Easier
One tableau per group with a simple theme.
Standard
Three tableaux with slow-motion transitions.
Harder
When the teacher taps a character's shoulder, that student says aloud what the character is thinking.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student in a wheelchair is the focal point and the group builds around them.
- Shyness: start as part of the background and grow the role gradually.
- Advanced students: direct the group as the photographer, checking levels and focus.
Learning goals
- Compose group pictures with different levels and directions.
- Express emotions and character relationships without words.
- Organize a story into a beginning, conflict, and ending.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 10
Teacher tip
Always ask for all three levels; if everyone is standing, the picture loses impact. Have cards ready with open-ended titles connected to students' daily lives.
