From My Little House to Yours
Each child has a little house (a hoop), and the houses are linked by rope paths. Kids visit a neighbor's house along a path and then go back home. They work on finding their way, remembering their own spot, going and coming back, and following a route.
How to play
- Before class, place one hoop per child around the gym and connect them with ropes on the floor, like paths forming a network.
- Each child picks a house and sits inside. Say: “Look carefully at where your house is: near the door? By the window?” (1 min).
- “Knock, knock, let's go visiting!” Each child walks along a rope to another house, waves to the neighbor and waits. When they hear “Go home!” they return along a path (4 min).
- Change how they travel on the path: on tiptoes, crawling beside the rope, with tiny steps, sideways (4 min).
- Long visit: “Now visit two houses before going home.” At the end ask: “Who found their house?” (3 min).
- To finish, pick up the ropes and gather the hoops in the middle like a town; everyone sits in it (3 min).
Rules
- Walk on the path, no running.
- If someone is coming toward you, stop and let them pass.
- Say “knock, knock” before visiting a house.
- Ropes stay on the floor, don't pick them up.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, a few straight paths, and help kids who can't find their house.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, a full path network and one visit at a time.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, visit two or three houses in a row and come back a different way.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: wide paths with a rope on each side so a wheelchair or walker can travel down the middle.
- Visual or autism: mark the child's own house with a familiar object, like their scarf or photo.
- Skill level: skilled kids walk on the rope like tightrope walkers; kids who need help walk beside it.
Learning goals
- Remember and recognize their own spot in the room.
- Follow a marked path there and back.
- Connect with classmates through visits and greetings.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 20
- ropes: 20
Teacher tip
Set up the path network ahead of time; it's the slowest part. Point out clear landmarks in the gym to help kids remember their house.
