Freeze! Three Giant Steps Tag
Regular tag with a surprise pause: on the whistle, everyone freezes and each tagger may take three giant steps to try to tag someone who can't move their feet. Students practice self-control, judging distance, and dodging with their upper body.
How to play
- Mark a 20 x 20 m area. Pick 3 taggers in pinnies; everyone else spreads out (1 min).
- On a long whistle, regular tag begins. A tagged player puts on the pinny and the tagger is free.
- At any moment, the teacher blows two short whistles: everyone freezes where they are, feet planted.
- Each tagger may take three giant steps toward anyone and reach out to tag them. The runner may lean and duck but cannot move their feet.
- If the tagger makes contact, they switch roles. On another long whistle, play goes back to normal.
- Freeze 2 or 3 times per minute in 3-minute rounds; play 3 rounds with 30-second breaks.
Rules
- On the double whistle, feet stay planted; anyone who moves their feet becomes a tagger.
- Giant steps are long strides, not jumps or running.
- When dodging without moving your feet, keep your balance so you don't fall.
- Tag gently and never push a frozen player.
Variations
Easier
Taggers may take five giant steps and freezes are less frequent.
Standard
Three giant steps, three taggers, and frequent freezes.
Harder
Only two giant steps are allowed, but runners must freeze on one foot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: during a freeze, the student may move one arm's length in the wheelchair, and the tagger's number of steps is adjusted.
- Hearing loss: pair the double whistle with both arms raised, and signal the restart with a big hand sweep.
- Fitness level: students with lower fitness use freezes to recover; call them closer together to give more breaks.
Learning goals
- Control their body in response to a stop signal.
- Judge distances to choose whom to try to tag.
- Dodge by leaning and twisting without moving their feet.
Equipment for a class of 25
- pinnies: 3
- whistle: 1
Teacher tip
The giant-step moment gets kids really excited; remind them that planted feet are a matter of fair play. Mix freezes that come quickly with ones that are spaced out.
