Freeze Mob: Surprise Statues in the Schoolyard
A flash mob variant in which the group, spread out among people in the schoolyard, freezes all at once in the middle of an everyday action for one minute and then carries on as if nothing happened. Students work on stage presence, postural control and organizing a short performance in a public space at school.
How to play
- In the gym, each student picks an everyday action (tying a shoe, checking a phone, laughing with someone) and practices freezing it at its most expressive point (5 min).
- Group rehearsal: walk mixed together, freeze at the whistle for 60 seconds without moving or laughing, and resume at the second whistle (6 min).
- Assign roles: two give the signal, two film from high points with the principal's permission and the rest perform; agree on a meeting point (4 min).
- Perform in the schoolyard or the lobby at the agreed time, repeating it twice in different places (5 min).
- Back in class: watch the footage and discuss how the audience reacted and which poses were hardest to hold (5 min).
Rules
- Only perform with the principal's permission and after telling the staff on duty.
- Never block doors, stairs or emergency exit routes.
- Poses must be safe to hold for one minute: nothing on one leg or off balance.
- Film the group, not recognizable bystanders; videos are not posted without permission.
Variations
Easier
Freeze for 30 seconds in a space with little foot traffic.
Standard
A 60-second freeze in two school spaces, with filming.
Harder
The freeze transforms: at the second whistle, instead of carrying on, everyone regroups into a single group sculpture.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: freezes an action from the wheelchair, such as about to drink or wave.
- Hearing impairment: the signal is also given by raising a brightly colored scarf visible from afar.
- Social anxiety: may take the filming or signal role and perform in the gym version.
Learning goals
- Keep postural control and focus during a public performance.
- Organize a short artistic action with roles and permissions.
- Analyze how an audience reacts to a break in the everyday.
Equipment for a class of 25
- whistles: 2
- tablets or phones: 2
Teacher tip
Choose a break or class change with enough people around but no crowding. Tell the front office so it is not mistaken for an incident.
