Four-Way Tug-of-War
Four students hold a rope tied into a ring and each pulls toward their own side to reach a bandanna placed 2 m behind them. It's a pulling and opposition game where students work on strength, body position, and reading the forces of the others.
How to play
- Tie each rope into a ring and set up 6 stations: a cone in the center and four bandannas in a cross shape, 2 m outside each player (3 minutes).
- Groups of 4 of similar strength. Teach the safe stance: rope held in both hands at waist height, knees bent, weight back (2 minutes).
- Bout: on the signal, everyone pulls toward their bandanna. The winner grabs it with their free hand without letting go of the rope. Bouts last up to 30 seconds (5 minutes, several bouts).
- Rotation: the winners from each station group together and so do the others, to even out strength (3 minutes).
- Alliance round: two players across from each other may agree to pull together, but only someone who grabs their own bandanna scores (3 minutes).
- Two-minute wrap-up: which strategy worked better, pulling hard or waiting for the others to tire?
Rules
- No one lets go of the rope suddenly; to stop pulling, step toward the center.
- Never wrap the rope around hands, wrists, or waist.
- Play on clear ground with at least 3 m between stations.
- If someone falls, the teacher blows the whistle and everyone eases off together.
Variations
Easier
Play three-way with the bandanna 1.5 m away.
Standard
Four players, bandannas 2 m away, and 30-second bouts.
Harder
Play with pairs on each side; both must touch the bandanna to win.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play seated on one side with the bandanna placed closer.
- Visual impairment: replace the bandanna with a cone holding a bell, and a partner guides with their voice.
- Less strength: group with students at their level or give a 50 cm head start.
Learning goals
- Use safe body positions when pulling.
- Apply leg and trunk strength in a combative situation.
- Read the situation to decide when to pull or give way.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long ropes: 6
- cones: 6
- bandannas: 24
Teacher tip
Use thick ropes to prevent rope burn and check the knots before each round. Keep repeating the no-sudden-release rule, since it causes most falls.
