Four-Wall Country Line Dance
Students learn a 32-count line dance that turns a quarter each time through until it has faced all four walls, using classic country steps: grapevine, heel touches, rocking chair, and jazz box. Students work on movement memory, rhythm, and group coordination without a partner.
How to play
- Stand in front of staggered lines so everyone can see. Block 1 (counts 1-8): grapevine right with a touch, grapevine left with a touch. Repeat until students can do it without watching (3 minutes).
- Block 2 (9-16): right heel forward, together, left heel forward, together, then two toe taps back with each foot (3 minutes).
- Block 3 (17-24): rocking chair (step forward, rock back, step back, rock forward) and two walks forward with a clap (3 minutes).
- Block 4 (25-32): jazz box with a quarter turn left and two stomps in place. At the end, everyone faces the next wall (3 minutes).
- Link all 4 blocks without music while counting aloud, then with music, until the class completes all four walls (6 minutes).
- In groups of 6, add your own 8-count tag danced after the fourth wall and show it to another group (6 minutes).
Rules
- Lines are staggered with about 5 feet between people so nobody bumps on the turn.
- Anyone who gets lost keeps stepping in place and rejoins at the next block.
- Turn on the ball of the foot, not the heel, to protect the knees.
Variations
Easier
Dance without the turn, always facing front, using only blocks 1 and 2.
Standard
The full 32 counts with four-wall turns and a group tag.
Harder
Replace the quarter turn with a half turn and add a full turn in block 3.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: translate the steps to arm moves and short chair travels; mark the grapevines with one arm to each side.
- Students with autism: give a card showing the 4 blocks as drawings and announce each block change ahead of time.
- Skill level: students who know the dance stand in the back row to be the reference after turns.
Learning goals
- Memorize a 32-count sequence made of four blocks.
- Stay oriented in space after each quarter turn.
- Create a group block and fit it into the dance structure.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music
- portable speaker: 1
Teacher tip
After the first turn many students get lost because they can't see you; stand to the side or place two confident students on different walls. Count every block aloud the first few times.
