Four-Quadrant Zone Defense: Guard the Pin
Four defenders, each responsible for one quadrant, protect a cone standing in a hoop while four or five offensive players pass the ball to knock it down. Students practice zone defense, shifting toward the ball, and fast ball movement on offense.
How to play
- Make groups of 8 or 9 and set up 3 stations. At each one, mark a 12 x 12 m square split into 4 quadrants and place a hoop with a cone inside it in the center.
- Four defenders in pinnies each take one quadrant and may not leave it; nobody may step inside the hoop.
- The 4 or 5 offensive players move freely inside and outside the square, using hand passes with no dribbling; the player with the ball may not move.
- The offense scores by knocking over the cone with a throw from outside the hoop. After each attempt, the offense restarts from outside the square.
- The defender in the quadrant where the ball is steps up to pressure, and the other three shift toward that side to block the path to the cone.
- Switch roles every 3 minutes or after 3 knockdowns. Play 4 rounds and ask which quadrant was left most open.
Rules
- Defenders may not leave their quadrant or step into the hoop.
- Throws must be below the defenders' shoulder height.
- No pulling the ball out of hands: intercept passes or block shots with hands up.
- If a defender knocks the cone over, the offense gets the point.
Variations
Easier
Play 5 on offense against 4 and use a bigger cone or two cones inside the hoop.
Standard
Play 4 or 5 offensive players against 4 zone defenders.
Harder
The offense may only shoot after 4 passes, and the hoop is replaced with a smaller one.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student defends a smaller quadrant or plays as a fixed offensive player in a corner.
- Hearing impairment: signal role changes by holding up a pinnie and practice the defensive shift with gestures first.
- Fitness level: skilled players shoot only with their non-dominant hand; students who tire rotate to an outside passer role.
Learning goals
- Defend a zone by shifting toward the side of the ball.
- Coordinate help defense with teammates to protect the target.
- Move the ball quickly to find the open quadrant.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 27
- hoops: 3
- soft balls: 3
- pinnies: 12
Teacher tip
Defenders tend to stand still in the middle of their quadrant; use the cue "the ball pulls everyone." Make sure shots stay low to avoid balls to the face.
