Four-Player Paddleball Square Rally
Groups of four students stand at the corners of a square and rally with paddleball paddles, following a passing order that changes on the teacher's signal. Students practice aiming their hits, staying focused, and cooperating to keep the ball in the air.
How to play
- Place four hoops on the ground in a square about 13 feet per side for each group; each student stands inside a hoop with a paddle.
- Round 1, 3 minutes: the ball travels clockwise, each player hits to the person on their left, and the group counts hits without a drop.
- Round 2, 3 minutes: when the teacher calls 'switch', the direction reverses on the next hit; give the signal every 15 to 20 seconds.
- Round 3, 3 minutes: alternate hitting across the diagonal and then to the side, so the ball traces a Z shape.
- Round 4, 4 minutes: the hitter calls the receiver's name before hitting and may send it to anyone, but nobody can receive twice in a row.
- After each round, the group records its best streak; for the last round, half the students rotate to another square and play 3 more minutes with the new group.
Rules
- Stay inside your hoop; you may step out with one foot to reach the ball.
- Keep hits below head height so the ball doesn't fly into other groups.
- If the ball drops, the closest player picks it up and restarts with a soft hit.
Variations
Easier
Allow one bounce and shrink the square to 10 feet per side.
Standard
Play with no bounce, a 13-foot square, and four rounds with changing orders.
Harder
Each receiver must take one control tap before sending the ball on.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair takes one hoop and receives softer, higher hits from teammates.
- Hearing impairment: signal direction changes by raising a colored cone.
- Fitness or skill level: stronger groups widen the square to 16 feet.
Learning goals
- Aim each hit toward the designated partner.
- Stay focused in order to react to changes in passing order.
- Cooperate as a group to beat a shared record.
Equipment for a class of 25
- paddleball paddles: 24
- soft balls: 6
- hoops: 24
Teacher tip
Mix skill levels in each group so no one gets stuck with all the misses. If it's too noisy to hear your call, use a loud clap or the whistle.
