Four-Player Backward Pass Waves
Groups of four move down the field in a staggered line, passing the football backward from one end of the line to the other without dropping it. Students practice chest-height passes, staggered alignment, and communication.
How to play
- Make groups of 4 standing side by side on the end line, 3 m (10 ft) apart, with the ball at one end. The field is 25 m (about 80 ft) long, marked with cones (1 min).
- Walking: the ball carrier passes to the next player, who stays one step behind, and the ball travels down the line to the far end, then back. Do 2 waves down and back (2 min).
- Jogging: same thing, but the receiver calls for the ball with open hands at chest height and says 'Yes!' (3 min).
- Running: when the group crosses the far line, the last receiver touches the ball down. If the ball drops or goes forward, the group restarts from the line (3 min).
- Challenge: each group counts how many passes it makes in one 25 m wave and gets 3 tries to beat its record (2 min).
- Finish: two groups race side by side, starting once from the right and once from the left so everyone passes both ways (1 min).
Rules
- Stay in your own lane; nobody crosses in front of a teammate.
- Pass with two hands while looking at the receiver.
- Safety: keep at least 5 m between groups so nobody collides while running.
Variations
Easier
Use groups of 3 and keep the whole drill at a walk or easy jog.
Standard
Groups of 4 progressing from walk to jog to run, as described.
Harder
The group must move the ball down the line and back twice before crossing the finish.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair takes one end of the line and the group matches that pace.
- Visual impairment: use a ball with a bell inside or have the passer say the receiver's name before releasing it.
- Skill level: students who struggle receive in the middle spots, where passes are shorter.
Learning goals
- Pass the football backward with two hands at chest height.
- Keep a staggered alignment while moving as a group.
- Communicate to call for and receive the ball.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam footballs: 7
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Many kids line up flat and the pass ends up going forward, so mark the one-step stagger and praise it out loud. Stop the drill if groups start drifting into each other.
