Four-Line Roundabout Agility Drill
Four lines, one on each side of a square, head into a center roundabout of flat disc cones, go around it and exit toward another line without bumping into anyone. Students work on agility, spatial awareness and decisions on the move.
How to play
- Mark a 15 x 15 yard square with a cone at the middle of each side and a 4-yard-wide roundabout of flat disc cones in the center. Four lines of six, one at each cone (2 min).
- Traffic rule: always go counterclockwise around the roundabout, and whoever is already in it has the right of way.
- Round 1: the first student in each line jogs out, goes halfway around and joins the back of the opposite line. The next one leaves when the previous one enters the roundabout (3 min).
- Round 2: you hold up a colored card and everyone exits toward the line of that color, right, across or left (4 min).
- Round 3: speed up, and when you call "Switch!" the roundabout direction reverses (4 min).
- Wrap-up: what helped them avoid sudden stops or collisions (2 min).
Rules
- Nobody cuts through the middle of the roundabout.
- Yield to anyone already in the roundabout.
- If a collision is possible, slow down and yield, even if it costs time.
- No pushing or grabbing to get through.
Variations
Easier
Fast walking pace and exits only to the opposite line.
Standard
Jogging and running with exits to the line shown on the card.
Harder
Dribble a ball the whole way, or send two students from each line at once.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: in a wheelchair, the roundabout is larger and the student's line leaves more space.
- Visual impairment: use tall cones for the roundabout and a sighted guide holding hands.
- Lower fitness: may jog every round while others speed up.
Learning goals
- Improve agility to adjust speed and path.
- Read others' movement and anticipate crossings.
- Follow shared traffic rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 4
- flat disc cones: 12
- cards: 4
Teacher tip
Start slowly until the right-of-way rule is clear, since most collisions come from cutting across. Place the colored cards next to each line so they are easy to see.
