Four-Cone Box Drill with a Peer Coach
In groups of three, students run a four-cone square combining a sprint, side shuffle, backpedal and carioca while one partner times and another watches technique. They work on transitions between movements and improving with feedback.
How to play
- Set up 8 squares, 5 yards per side, with a cone at each corner. A group of three at each square: runner, timer and peer coach with the checklist (2 min).
- Explain the pattern from cone 1: sprint to 2, shuffle right to 3, backpedal to 4 and carioca back to 1. Touch each cone with the outside hand.
- The checklist has three points: low hips in the shuffle without crossing feet; braking with two short steps before each cone; eyes forward on the backpedal.
- Set one: everyone runs twice with 1 minute of rest; the timer records times and the coach marks yes or no on each point. Rotate roles after each runner (6 min).
- The coach shares the single most important fix. Set two runs the pattern the other way, shuffling left and carioca in the other direction (6 min).
- Each runner compares their times and marks which technique point improved (2 min).
Rules
- Touch every cone; touching without going around adds 1 second.
- Rotate roles after each runner so everyone recovers.
- Safety: squares stay 3 yards apart and backpedaling stays inside your own square.
- The coach talks about technique, not time.
Variations
Easier
Use a 4-yard square and swap the carioca for a shuffle.
Standard
Five-yard square with four movements in both directions.
Harder
The timer calls the direction right at the start, and a second square is added next to the first.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: use a 7-yard square in a wheelchair with turns at every corner and track personal improvement.
- Autism or shyness: start as the timer and watch two partners before running.
- Lower fitness: one run per set with 2 minutes of rest.
Learning goals
- Link sprinting, shuffling, backpedaling and carioca smoothly.
- Brake and change direction with safe technique.
- Observe with criteria and give useful feedback.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 32
- stopwatches: 8
- observation checklists: 25
Teacher tip
Carioca often falls apart, so have students practice it at a walk before set one. Make sure coaches fill in the checklist during the run, not afterward.
