Foul or Flop? Slow-Motion Replay Theater
In groups, students act out slow-motion plays involving either a real foul or a flop, while the rest of the class votes like a review panel. They work on body expression and discuss why faking it is cheating.
How to play
- Make 5 groups of 5 and give each a secret scenario card: real foul, flop, accidental handball, hidden elbow or fall with no contact (2 min).
- Each group spends 6 minutes preparing a 30-second slow-motion scene on mats, with roles for attacker, defender, referee and teammates.
- Each group performs its scene twice: slow speed, then super slow like an instant replay.
- The others vote with a green card (real foul) or red card (flop) and explain which body detail convinced them (10 min total).
- The group reveals its card and replays the scene with a sporting ending: the player admits the truth.
- Discussion (5 min): what does flopping do to opponents, referees and the sport?
Rules
- Falls are always slow and on mats.
- No real contact: hits are faked from a distance.
- Votes are respected with no teasing.
- Every group member has a role that involves movement.
Variations
Easier
Only clear real-foul or flop scenarios.
Standard
Five different scenarios, two replays and a sporting ending.
Harder
Groups add a red herring to the scene, and voters must justify their vote with two details.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play the referee or narrate the replay.
- Autism or shy students: act as camera operator or scene director without performing.
- Strong performers: add controlled, exaggerated facial expressions.
Learning goals
- Act out sports actions in slow motion with body control.
- Tell a flop from a real foul.
- Explain why flopping is a form of cheating.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 10
- scenario cards: 5
- cardstock: 50
Teacher tip
Insist on slow motion: it keeps the scene safe and makes it funny. Show an exaggerated example yourself first to break the ice.
