Forest of Still Trees
Half the group are still trees spread around the gym and the other half are butterflies flying between them, around them and under their branches. Then they switch roles. Kids practice between, around, in front of, behind and under, and respecting classmates.
How to play
- Split the group in half. The trees spread around the gym, standing with arms open like branches. The butterflies wait on one side with their arms as wings.
- With soft music, butterflies fly between the trees without touching them. Trees stay still (2 min).
- Butterfly calls: “Fly around a tree,” “stand in front of a tree,” “hide behind a tree” (3 min).
- Some trees pair up and join hands overhead to make an arch: “Fly under the branches” (2 min).
- Stop the music and switch roles: trees become butterflies and butterflies become trees. Repeat the calls (6 min).
- To finish, everyone is a tree. You are the wind, and the trees sway slowly, softer and softer, until they're still (2 min).
Rules
- Butterflies fly without touching the trees.
- Trees don't move or trip anyone.
- When the music stops, everyone freezes.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, only flying between and around trees, with you as a tree to help.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, add in front of, behind and under.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, two calls in a row: “around a tree, then under an arch.”
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child can be a tree with branches up from the wheelchair, or a butterfly flying among trees spaced farther apart.
- Autism: preview the role switch with a clear signal and let the child be a tree first if they prefer.
- Skill level: trees closer together for skilled kids, farther apart for kids who need more room.
Learning goals
- Move between, around, in front of, behind and under a classmate.
- Hold a still pose while others move.
- Respect classmates' space and bodies.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music
Teacher tip
Pick calm music and signal the role switch with a clear gesture. Trees can't stay still for long: switch after three minutes.
