Football Spiral Pass to Hoop Targets
In groups of three, students learn the overhand spiral throw with a football and aim it at hoops set at different distances. They work on grip, trunk rotation, and accuracy.
How to play
- Form groups of three with one ball and lay 3 hoops on the ground at 5, 8, and 11 m (about 15, 25, and 35 ft) from a throwing cone. One student throws, one retrieves behind the hoops, and one keeps score (2 min).
- Technique, 3 minutes: fingers on the laces or seams, opposite foot forward, elbow high by the ear, and on release the wrist turns down like pouring out a glass. Practice with a partner 4 m apart.
- Round 1: each student throws 5 times at the 5 m hoop; it scores 1 point if the ball lands inside or touches the hoop. Rotate roles after each set (3 min).
- Round 2: each student picks a hoop before throwing; the 5 m hoop is worth 1 point, 8 m is 2, and 11 m is 3 (4 min).
- Round 3: the retriever stands inside a hoop and must catch the ball without stepping out; each catch is worth 2 points (3 min).
- Each group adds up its points and talks about which technique cue helped most.
Rules
- Only throw when the retriever is ready and looking.
- Nobody crosses the throwing area while a ball is in the air.
- Safety: groups line up side by side and everyone throws in the same direction.
Variations
Easier
Place hoops at 3, 5, and 7 m and allow a two-handed overhead throw.
Standard
Hoops at 5, 8, and 11 m with an overhand throw.
Harder
The thrower takes three shuffle steps before releasing, like a pass on the move.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair throws from a seated position with the hoops moved closer and scores the same way.
- Visual impairment: the retriever claps from behind the hoop to give a target.
- Skill level: students who have the spiral down can use a bigger football or throw with the other hand.
Learning goals
- Grip and throw a football overhand with a spiral.
- Adjust throwing force to the distance of the target.
- Work as a group by taking turns as thrower, retriever, and scorekeeper.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam footballs: 9
- hoops: 27
- cones: 9
Teacher tip
If the ball wobbles end over end, check the grip and cue them to finish with the wrist turned down. Set up the groups so no one ends up standing in front of another group.
