Foam Block Mega House for Everyone
The whole class builds a house from foam blocks big enough for everyone to fit inside, following a rope on the floor as the outline. Kids work on cooperation, carrying objects, careful placing, and the concepts of inside and outside.
How to play
- Before class, lay the long rope in a big circle and spread the foam blocks around the gym. Gather everyone around the rope: "Let's build a house for the whole class."
- Carrying: each child picks up a block, carries it to the rope, and sets it on top, touching the last one. Then they go get another. Change how blocks are carried: in arms, on the head, with a partner (5 minutes).
- Once the first row is done, build a second row on top, about knee high. Leave a gap: "This is the door."
- Roof: four kids hold the sheets by the corners over the house while everyone else walks in through the door one at a time and sits down inside (3 minutes).
- "Knock, knock!": you knock from outside and the kids answer with a movement: "We're cats!" and crawl out; "We're frogs!" and hop out. Go back in as another animal (3 minutes).
- At the end, everyone takes the house apart, each child walking two blocks back to the pile (2 minutes).
Rules
- Carry one block at a time and walk.
- Place blocks, never throw them.
- Use the door to go in, no climbing over the wall.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, build a single row with no roof, and walk them in.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, build two rows and add the sheet roof.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, they also build a window and a block path leading to the house.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child carries blocks on the lap; make the door wide enough for the wheelchair.
- Autism or shyness: give a fixed job (building the door) and let the child go in first.
- More skilled kids carry two stacked blocks; less skilled kids slide a block.
Learning goals
- Cooperate with the whole class on a shared build.
- Carry and place objects with control.
- Understand inside, outside, around, and on top.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam blocks: 40
- long rope: 1
- old bedsheets: 2
Teacher tip
Set up the outline and blocks before kids arrive. Celebrate group progress out loud, like "We have a door!" Watching the house grow keeps them motivated.
