Floorball Quick Transition Game
A 4v4 floorball game where, right after a goal, the teacher rolls a second ball from the sideline to the team that just conceded, so everyone must switch from offense to defense within seconds. Students work on reaction, communication and getting back on defense.
How to play
- Set up a court about 65 x 40 ft with two small goals. Three or four teams of 4 in pinnies; two play and the rest wait on the sideline (3 min).
- Normal 3-minute game with no goalies: goals count only from outside a 10 ft half circle marked in front of each goal.
- From the second round on, when a team scores, the teacher blows the whistle and rolls a new ball to the team that conceded, which attacks right away while the scoring team hustles back.
- A goal within 5 seconds of a steal or a teacher's ball is worth 2. Teams rotate every 3 minutes, winners stay on (12 min).
- 1-minute break between rounds so each team can agree on a verbal "get back" call. Finish with back stretches and a comment on the best transition (4 min).
Rules
- Sticks stay below the waist, with no hitting an opponent's stick.
- Only one ball is live: when the new one enters, the old one is stopped and moved aside.
- No body contact; defend by putting the stick on the floor in the passing lane.
Variations
Easier
4v4 with no extra ball and goals from anywhere.
Standard
Extra ball to the team that concedes, with transition goals worth double.
Harder
The teacher may roll the extra ball at any moment, not just after a goal.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: holds a fixed passing spot on the sideline where every attack must start.
- Hearing impairment: signal the ball change by raising a colored pinnie as well as the whistle.
- Lower fitness: allow free substitutions with a waiting teammate.
Learning goals
- React quickly to changes of possession between offense and defense.
- Communicate with the team to get back in an organized way.
- Take advantage of the opponents' disorganization in the first seconds.
Equipment for a class of 25
- floorball sticks: 25
- balls: 8
- small goals: 2
- pinnies: 16
Teacher tip
Keep a bucket of balls at the sideline to roll in quickly. At first everyone chases the ball, so ask that the last defender always stay behind it.
