Floorball Lanes: Attacking with Width
A floorball game with the court split into three lengthwise lanes: each attacker is assigned a lane and can't leave it. Students learn to use the full width and stop bunching around the ball.
How to play
- Explain: two courts split into three lanes with cones; each team of five has one player per lane plus a defender and a goalie or small goal (4 min).
- Fixed lanes: each player attacks only in their lane and defends anywhere (7 min).
- Rotate lanes after every goal so everyone plays both center and wing (7 min).
- Open lanes: players may switch lanes, but two attackers from the same team can never share one (8 min).
- Final free game with no lanes, then discuss: did you keep the width without the rule? (4 min).
Rules
- If an attacker leaves their lane with the ball, it goes to the other team.
- Defend without touching the opponent's stick or body.
- Sticks below the waist, and low shots if there's a goalie.
- Teams are mixed and balanced.
Variations
Easier
Fixed lanes the whole game plus an extra attacker.
Standard
Fixed lanes with rotation, then open lanes.
Harder
A goal only counts if the ball went through all three lanes in that play.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: play in the center lane, which is wider, and their direct opponent keeps one meter away.
- Students with lower fitness: play defender, which involves less running.
- Students who need extra support understanding: each lane is marked with a cone color and their pinnie has a clip of the same color.
Learning goals
- Use the full width of the court in attack.
- Avoid bunching around the ball.
- Understand the role of each attacking position.
Equipment for a class of 25
- floorball sticks: 30
- floorball balls: 4
- floorball goals: 4
- cones: 30
- pinnies: 30
Teacher tip
When you remove the lanes at the end, they almost always bunch up again: stop play and ask three students to point to where their lane was. That's when the idea clicks.
