Floorball Forechecking Game
A game situation where one team forechecks in the opponent's end to steal the ball before the other team breaks out. Students work on coordinated pressure in pairs, cutting passing lanes, and finishing quickly after a steal.
How to play
- Split a 40 x 20 m court into three zones with cones, put a goal at each end, and make teams of 5 plus a goalie (2 min).
- 2-on-2: two players break out from behind their goal while two forecheck; the first goes to the ball and the second takes away the near pass (5 min).
- 3-on-3: the third forechecker cuts off the long pass in the neutral zone; after a steal there are 6 seconds to shoot (5 min).
- Play 5-on-5: whenever a goalie gets the ball, their team restarts from behind the goal and the other team may forecheck anywhere (8 min).
- A regular goal is 1 point; a goal off a steal in the attacking zone before the ball crosses center is 2. Finish by discussing which pair forechecked best (2 min).
Rules
- Forechecking means positioning and cutting lanes, never hitting sticks or pushing.
- Sticks below the waist; a high stick is a free hit for the other team.
- Only one player forechecks behind the goal to avoid pile-ups on the wall.
- Line changes every 90 seconds to keep intensity up.
Variations
Easier
Only one player may forecheck and the breakout team has a free neutral player at center.
Standard
Full-court forechecking with double points for goals off a steal in the attacking zone.
Harder
The breakout team plays 6-on-5 and the forecheck must win the ball within 8 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play goalie or a neutral player at center in a protected space.
- Autism: mark each player's area with colored cones and keep the same partners.
- Fitness level: 60-second shifts for students who need more frequent recovery.
Learning goals
- Coordinate pressure in pairs to shut down passing options.
- Finish quickly after a steal.
- Manage effort through organized line changes.

Teacher tip
The usual mistake is everyone chasing the ball and leaving lanes open; freeze play and show the gaps. Watch for contact along the end wall.
