Floorball 1-on-1 Battles with a Goalie
1v1 floorball battles in narrow lanes that end at a goal with a goalie: the attacker has 8 seconds to beat the defender with fakes and changes of pace and get a shot off. Students work on protected stickhandling, beating a defender and defending without fouling.
How to play
- Use cones to mark three 50 x 20 ft lanes, each with a small goal and a goalie at the end. Groups of 8 per lane in two lines: attackers and defenders (3 min).
- The defender passes the ball to the attacker from the goal line and steps up to defend; the attacker has 8 seconds to shoot. A goal earns the attacker 1 point; a steal carried past the start line earns the defender 1.
- After each battle the attacker joins the defender line and the defender joins the attacker line. Goalies switch every 3 minutes (9 min).
- 1-minute break: which fakes work best (switching sides, stopping short, faking a shot) and how to defend without lifting the stick.
- Final 4-minute tournament: each student tallies offense and defense points and the top player in each lane is recognized (5 min).
Rules
- Sticks below the waist at all times, with no hitting the opponent's stick or feet.
- No hard slap shots from closer than 10 ft to the goalie.
- If the defender fouls, the attacker replays the battle.
Variations
Easier
The defender starts one second late and the attacker has 10 seconds.
Standard
1v1 battle with 8 seconds and a goalie.
Harder
The attacker must fake at least once before shooting and has 6 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: attacks in a wider lane against a defender who may only move sideways.
- Autistic students: stay in the same lane and preview role changes with a visual signal.
- Advanced players: must defend holding the stick with the top hand only.
Learning goals
- Carry the ball while shielding it with the body and stick.
- Beat a defender with fakes and changes of pace.
- Defend by steering the attacker toward the sideline without fouling.
Equipment for a class of 25
- floorball sticks: 25
- balls: 6
- small goals: 3
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
Use goalie masks if your school has them; otherwise goalies kneel and shots stay on the floor. Keep lines short so nobody waits more than a minute.
