Floor Table Tennis over a Low Rope
A version of table tennis played on the gym floor without tables: each pair plays in a taped rectangle with a rope 6 inches high as the net, kneeling or squatting. Students build fine control of the paddle, adjust hitting force, and learn to read the bounce.
How to play
- Tape rectangles 5 by 10 feet on the floor and tie a rope 6 inches high across the middle of each one, held by two chairs or cones; one rectangle per pair.
- Warm up for 3 minutes with a cooperative kneeling rally, letting the ball bounce once on each half of the court.
- Explain the rules in 2 minutes: serve with one bounce on your side and one on the opponent's; after that, the ball bounces once per side before being returned.
- Play games to 7 points with two serves per player; a player loses the point if the ball touches the rope, goes out of the rectangle, or bounces twice.
- Every 5 minutes, on the whistle, change opponents: winners move up one court and losers move down one.
- Play three rounds; in the last one, only backhands are allowed on odd-numbered points.
Rules
- Play on your knees or in a squat; don't lie across the court to reach the ball.
- Pick up stray balls right away so nobody steps on one and slips.
- Take care of the paddle and ball; never bang them on the floor.
Variations
Easier
Use 6-by-13-foot rectangles and lower the rope to 4 inches.
Standard
Use 5-by-10-foot rectangles, a 6-inch rope, and games to 7 points.
Harder
Only shots that bounce in the back half of the opponent's court score.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: if a student can't kneel, they play on a classroom desk or bench set at the height of their chair.
- Visual impairment: use orange balls and dark tape on a light floor.
- Fitness or skill level: more skilled students choke up and hold the paddle by the rubber face.
Learning goals
- Control hitting force in a small space.
- Read the bounce of a light ball to hit at the right moment.
- Respect serving turns and keep score correctly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- paddles: 26
- ping-pong balls: 30
- rope: 13
- masking tape: 4
Teacher tip
This is a handy option when you don't have enough tables or you're working in a small room. Keep a bag of spare balls handy, since they get lost and crushed easily on a hard floor.
