Floor Ladder Steps
Using poles laid on the floor like ladders, kids step between the rungs lifting their knees high, without stepping on the poles, and freeze in balance between them. They work on dynamic balance with every step and foot control.
How to play
- Make 3 ladders on the floor with 6 poles each, a small step apart. Next to each, kids who are waiting step in place drawing imaginary rungs with their arms. Demonstrate by walking through slowly.
- Make three groups, one per ladder. First they walk through slowly, one foot in each space, without touching the poles. The next child starts when the one in front reaches the third space. 3 minutes.
- Giant steps: they lift their knees high in each space, like climbing stairs. 2 minutes.
- Stop-and-go ladder: on the tambourine, everyone freezes in the space where they are, on one foot, counting to three. 3 minutes.
- Sideways ladder: they cross sideways like crabs, one foot in each space. Then very slowly backward for those who want to. 3 minutes.
- Cleanup: each child carries one pole back, holding it flat with both hands. 1 minute.
Rules
- Poles stay on the floor: we don't pick them up or step on them.
- Start when the child ahead reaches the third space.
- Walk, don't jump between the rungs.
- Always carry poles flat.
Variations
Easier
Poles closer together, walking with the teacher's hand.
Standard
Walk through lifting knees and freeze on one foot.
Harder
Cross sideways or backward and freeze on one foot with arms crossed.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: space the poles wider to pass with a walker, or crawl along the ladder.
- Low vision: bright-colored poles on a light floor and a buddy counting the spaces out loud.
- More skilled kids freeze with eyes closed; kids who need support use a ladder with only three poles.
Learning goals
- Keep balance with each step while lifting a foot.
- Control foot placement without stepping on obstacles.
- Stop moving and hold a pose on a signal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- poles: 18
- tambourine: 1
Teacher tip
If the poles roll, tape them down or use ropes. Let each child go at their own pace and celebrate effort, not speed.
