Floor Hockey Freeze Play with Student Coaches
A 4-on-4 floor hockey game where a student coach can freeze play with a whistle, reposition players and restart the play. Students practice tactical observation, on-the-spot coaching and use of space.
How to play
- Make four teams of 5 (4 players and a coach) on two courts with small goals; any extras serve as assistant coaches (2 min).
- On the whistle everyone freezes; the coach steps in, moves one or two players, explains why in one sentence and restarts by saying "play."
- 5-minute game: each coach may freeze play three times to fix their own team, never the opponent.
- After each game the coach plays and someone else takes the whistle (4 games of 5 min).
- A goal within 20 seconds of a freeze counts double.
- Wrap-up: each team names the most common correction and whether play improved (3 min).
Rules
- Sticks never go above the waist.
- Nobody moves after the whistle until the coach says "play."
- Each explanation lasts 20 seconds at most.
- The ball is played with the stick; a kicked goal does not count.
Variations
Easier
The teacher freezes play and the student coach decides the correction.
Standard
Student coach with three freezes per game.
Harder
Five freezes, but only one player may be moved each time.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: serve as permanent coach or play in a marked zone with no direct pressure.
- Visual impairment: use a bright ball, and the coach taps their shoulder when repositioning them.
- Shyness: point to the right spot with the stick while an assistant explains out loud.
Learning goals
- Spot positioning mistakes in live play.
- Give a brief tactical correction on the court.
- Apply the coach's instructions in the game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- floor hockey sticks: 20
- balls: 4
- small goals: 4

Teacher tip
Early freezes tend to target technique: steer coaches toward positioning and open space. Watch that nobody raises their stick while frozen.
