Floor Hockey 2-on-1 Lane Waves
In lanes 8 meters wide, two players dribble the ball with their sticks and beat one defender to score on a small goal. Students work on stick handling, flat passes along the floor and the choice between passing and carrying on.
How to play
- Use cones to mark 4 lanes of 8 x 20 meters with a small goal at the end. Put 6 students per lane: two attacking pairs and two defenders taking turns (4 min).
- Review the grip: left hand on top, right hand halfway down, stick always below the knee. Do 2 minutes of free stick handling along the lane.
- The defender waits in the middle of the lane; the pair starts at the far end passing the ball and must beat the defender to score.
- If the defender steps to the ball carrier, pass to the open teammate; if the defender hangs back, keep dribbling and shoot. Each goal is worth 1 point for the pair.
- Rotate every 3 waves: one pair takes turns on defense and the defender joins the attack. Play 12 minutes.
Rules
- The stick never goes above the knee, not even when shooting.
- Play the ball only with the flat face of the blade.
- No hitting an opponent's stick or feet; steal only by playing the ball.
- Nobody enters the lane until the previous wave is finished.
Variations
Easier
The defender plays without a stick and may only block the ball with the feet.
Standard
2-on-1 in an 8-meter lane with a small goal.
Harder
Narrow the lane to 6 meters and add a second defender waiting by the goal.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: use a short stick, or play seated on a scooter board as the passer at the far end.
- Students with visual impairments: use a large, bright-colored ball or one with bells, and lanes marked with floor tape.
- Lower fitness levels: shorten the lane to 15 meters.
Learning goals
- Dribble the ball close to the stick while looking ahead.
- Make a flat pass to a teammate at the right moment.
- Strike the ball safely without raising the stick.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hockey sticks: 25
- floor hockey balls: 6
- small goals: 4
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
Check the grip before starting: most students hold the stick like a broom. Stop play as soon as someone raises the stick above the knee.
