Flip the Tarp Challenge
Groups of five or six stand on a tarp and must flip it completely over without anyone touching the floor. This classic team challenge pushes students to listen, share ideas, get organized, and physically support each other with care.
How to play
- Make groups of 5 or 6 and give each group a tarp about 6 × 5 feet laid flat, at least 10 feet from the next one. The whole group stands on it.
- Explain the challenge: flip the tarp until it is upside down without any foot, hand, or knee touching the floor. If someone touches, the group starts over from the beginning.
- Allow 1 minute of planning without moving: each person suggests an idea and the group picks one.
- First attempt (5 min). Groups that succeed raise their hands, and their tarp is folded in half for a harder second try.
- One-minute pause: each group talks about what worked and who came up with helpful ideas.
- Second attempt (4 min) with the folded tarp or in total silence, using gestures only.
- Debrief (2 min): Was everyone heard? How did you help each other keep your balance?
Rules
- Nobody yanks or pulls the tarp roughly while classmates are on it.
- You may hold a teammate by the arms or shoulders, never by the neck.
- No piggyback rides or standing on shoulders.
Variations
Easier
Use a bigger tarp and allow one floor touch per group.
Standard
Use a regular-size tarp with no floor touches.
Harder
Fold the tarp in half and allow only gestures to communicate.
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility can lead the strategy from the side or sit on the tarp while the group flips it.
- For shy students, give each person a turn to speak during planning so they share at least one idea.
- For very capable groups, add a 2-minute time limit or an object that must not fall.
Learning goals
- Cooperate to solve a physical challenge with no one left out.
- Listen to and value everyone's ideas.
- Adjust their own balance to support others.

Teacher tip
Use tarps or old sheets that do not slide on the gym floor. Groups often fail because they skip planning, so let them discover that before giving hints.
