Flip the Pancake with a Towel
In pairs, kids hold a towel like a frying pan and bounce a beanbag or soft ball on it, like flipping a pancake. Children practice working together, gripping, and timing their movements with a partner.
How to play
- Make pairs. Each pair holds a towel by the corners, one hand on each corner, facing each other (1 min).
- Put a beanbag on top: "This is the pancake." First rock it side to side without dropping it (2 min).
- Demonstrate with a pair: lower the towel a little, then lift it fast together: "One, two, and… flip the pancake!" The beanbag pops up and lands back on the towel (1 min).
- All pairs try flipping the pancake, low at first, then higher (3 min).
- New ingredient: a soft ball, which bounces more and is harder to control (3 min).
- Finish: "The pancake is cooling": pairs walk it on the towel to the basket and drop it in together (2 min).
Rules
- Hold the towel with both hands and don't let go suddenly.
- Count together before flipping.
- If the pancake falls, either partner picks it up and you keep going.
- Each pair stays in its own space, away from others.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, just rock the pancake without dropping it, and the teacher helps with the flip.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, flip the beanbag a little way up.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, flip the ball higher or toss it to a nearby pair's towel.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: hold the towel seated; the partner kneels to match the child's height.
- Autism: start with a trusted partner and always the same count; show the move before each round.
- Skill levels: confident kids use a small ball; kids who need support use a big towel and a beanbag.
Learning goals
- Coordinate arm movements with a partner.
- Toss and catch an object with a towel.
- Talk with a partner to move at the same time.
Equipment for a class of 25
- towels: 10
- soft balls: 10
- bean bags: 10
Teacher tip
Use old hand towels or small pieces of fabric; the tighter the towel, the better the bounce. Counting out loud is key to flipping together.
