Flip the Field: Switch Goals on the Whistle
An invasion game with hand passes toward cone goals in which, at two whistle blasts, both teams start attacking the opposite goal. Students practice reorienting quickly, transitioning between offense and defense, and reading the new open space.
How to play
- Make 4 teams of 6 (one of 7) and set up 2 fields of 25 x 15 m. At each end, make a 3 m goal with 2 cones.
- Play with hand passes, up to 3 steps, and 3 seconds with the ball. A team scores by passing to a teammate who catches it just behind the line between the cones.
- When the teacher gives two short whistle blasts, teams switch goals: the team attacking north now attacks south. Play does not stop.
- A goal scored within 5 seconds after a switch counts double.
- Play 4-minute blocks with 2 to 4 switches per block at unpredictable times.
- Between blocks, take 1 minute to talk: who stayed close to the new goal, and how does the defense reorganize? Play 4 blocks, switching opponents halfway.
Rules
- No contact: win the ball by intercepting.
- When the field flips, nobody runs backward without looking: turn your head first.
- No one may stand on the opponents' goal line for more than 3 seconds.
- After a goal, the team that was scored on inbounds from its end line.
Variations
Easier
Use only one switch per block and give a raised-hand warning before the whistle.
Standard
Use 2 to 4 switches per block, with double points in the 5 seconds after a switch.
Harder
One whistle means switch goals and three whistles mean the ball goes to the other team.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is a fixed neutral in the middle of the field and always plays with the team that has the ball.
- Hearing impairment: signal each switch at the same time by raising a brightly colored pinnie.
- Fitness level: skilled players must catch with their non-dominant hand; students who tire can play as a defender near their goal.
Learning goals
- Quickly reorient play when the target changes.
- Switch from offense to defense, and back, while staying organized.
- Take the open space that appears after the field flips.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 16
- pinnies: 13
- foam ball: 2
- whistles: 1
Teacher tip
The switch moment creates chaos and laughter; use it to teach looking before running. Leave a 3 m buffer between the two fields to prevent collisions.
