Flag Rugby: No Repeat Scorers Until Everyone Scores
Coed flag rugby games with a balancing rule: anyone who has scored a try can't score again until all their teammates have scored. Teams must design plays so the least involved players score, and students reflect on how the spotlight is shared.
How to play
- Form four coed teams of six; each player wears a belt with two flags, and each team keeps a roster on the sideline to cross off scorers (3 min).
- Review the rules: passes go backward, pulling a flag counts as a tackle and the carrier must pass within three seconds, and there's no contact (3 min).
- Play design: each team creates two simple attacking plays meant to finish with a specific teammate scoring (4 min).
- First round of 8-minute games on two fields with the scorer rule (8 min).
- Second 8-minute round against new opponents; crossed-off scorers carry over (8 min).
- Wrap-up: each team shares how many different members scored and which plays worked to include everyone (4 min).
Rules
- No tackling or pushing: only pull the flag, and hand it back to the carrier.
- The ball carrier can't guard the flags with their hands or spin to dodge.
- A try by a player already crossed off doesn't count, and the ball goes to the other team.
- Play on grass or dirt with no obstacles close to the sidelines.
Variations
Easier
Allow forward passes in the defensive half to make advancing easier.
Standard
Coed 6-on-6 flag rugby where no one scores twice until everyone has scored.
Harder
A try only counts if at least four different players touched the ball first.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays scrum half, starting every play with a pass from a fixed spot.
- Hearing impairment: the referee raises an arm as well as blowing the whistle for tackles and tries.
- Overweight or low fitness level: the student can play on a shorter field or with frequent subs, and their try also counts if they catch the ball in the end zone.
Learning goals
- Organize the attack so the whole team takes part and scores.
- Apply basic flag rugby rules safely.
- Reflect on how the spotlight is shared in coed team sports.

Teacher tip
This rule really motivates students who never score. Keep the scorer roster in plain view to head off arguments.
