Flag Rugby 3-on-2 Channel Waves
Three attackers with a rugby ball try to reach the try line by beating two defenders who pull their flags. Students work on passing backward, supporting deep behind the ball carrier and committing a defender before releasing the ball.
How to play
- Use cones to mark 3 channels of 12 x 25 meters with a try line at the end. Every student wears a flag belt with two flags; put 8 students per channel (4 min).
- Remind students of the key rugby rule: passes always go backward or sideways. Do 2 minutes of line passing while walking and jogging.
- Two defenders wait 10 meters away. The three attackers start in a staggered line and run forward; the ball carrier runs at a defender and passes just before the flag is pulled.
- If the ball carrier loses a flag, they stop, pass within 2 seconds and the attack continues. A try is worth 1 point; two flag pulls end the wave.
- Rotate after every wave: attackers become defenders and defenders go back to the line. Play 12 minutes.
Rules
- No contact: no pushing, no grabbing clothes and no guarding flags with your hands.
- A forward pass is a turnover and ends the wave.
- Defenders hand the flag back to the ball carrier instead of throwing it on the ground.
- Flags are worn on the sides of the hips, never tucked into shorts.
Variations
Easier
Use only one defender per wave and let attackers speed-walk instead of run.
Standard
3-on-2 in a 12-meter channel with two flag pulls per wave.
Harder
The second defender starts behind the attacking line and chases.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: act as the scrum-half who starts each wave with a backward pass from a fixed spot.
- Students with autism or shy students: start with passing without defenders and join the waves when they ask.
- Lower fitness levels: shorten the channel to 18 meters.
Learning goals
- Pass the ball backward accurately while running.
- Support deep behind the ball carrier.
- Commit the defender before releasing the ball.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam footballs: 3
- flag belts: 25
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is running flat and side by side: insist that supporting players stay a step behind. Check that every flag belt is fastened correctly before starting.
