Five-Level Partner Rally over the Rope
Partners rally over a rope while climbing through five difficulty levels, from catch-and-throw up to one-touch sets or bumps. Each pair moves up at its own pace after 10 sends in a row, which encourages cooperative learning and independence.
How to play
- Stretch several ropes at 6 feet high and place pairs on either side, 10 feet from the rope, with a light ball and a card listing the 5 levels (3 min).
- Level 1: two-hand toss over the rope and catch. Level 2: catch, self-set, and set it over.
- Level 3: receive with a set without catching, one bounce on the floor allowed. Level 4: two touches per side (self-set and send) with no bounce.
- Level 5: one touch per side, a set or a bump depending on how the ball arrives.
- Pairs move up a level after 10 sends in a row over the rope and mark it on their card; they have 12 min to get as far as they can.
- Finish (3 min): pairs at the same level join up as groups of 4 and play their level 2-on-2 cooperatively.
Rules
- The ball must go over the rope; if it goes under, that send doesn't count.
- Pairs move up a level together, never alone.
- Each pair stays on its section of rope; to get someone else's ball, wait until that pair stops.
- If a pair can't pass a level in 3 min, they may go back to the previous one to build confidence.
Variations
Easier
Use a balloon for levels 1 to 3 and lower the rope to 5 feet.
Standard
Five levels with a light ball, the rope at 6 feet, and 10 sends in a row to move up.
Harder
Pairs stand 13 feet from the rope and need 15 sends in a row to move up.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays seated with the rope at 4 feet on their section, and the partner adjusts their sends.
- Autism: the card has pictures for each level, and the pair stays the same all session.
- Very highly skilled students: the pair plays level 5 with one foot inside a hoop and can't step out.
Learning goals
- Rally cooperatively with a partner over a rope.
- Progress from catching to setting or bumping.
- Self-assess the level reached and set the next challenge.
Equipment for a class of 25
- light balls: 13
- long ropes: 3
- cards: 13
Teacher tip
Pair students of similar skill and walk the rope sections signing off levels. Celebrating each level-up motivates more than comparing pairs.
