Fitness Scavenger Hunt
In groups of three, students search the field for colored cones hiding cards with a fitness challenge and a letter. They complete each challenge, write down the letter, and work out a health-related keyword. It combines running, strength, and navigation.
How to play
- Before class, place 12 colored cones around the field with a card under each: a challenge (such as "15 squats each" or "30-second plank together") and a letter (3 min to explain).
- Make 8 groups of three with a worksheet and pencil. Each group gets a different color order so they don't crowd the same cones.
- Groups jog together to their first cone, read the card, complete the challenge as a trio, and write the letter on the worksheet.
- They put the card back under the cone and jog to the next color on their list (14-minute block).
- Once they have all 12 letters, they unscramble the keyword or phrase (for example, "HYDRATION") and show it to the teacher.
- Wrap-up: each group explains how the word connects to health and which challenge was toughest (5 min).
Rules
- Groups always move together and never leave anyone behind.
- A letter only counts if the full challenge is completed.
- Cards go back exactly where they were for the next group.
- Run looking ahead and don't cut through areas where other groups are exercising.
Variations
Easier
Eight cones with shorter challenges and a map showing where they are.
Standard
Twelve cones spread around the field, with a different color order for each group.
Harder
Each card gives a clue to find the next cone instead of a color list.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: place cones in accessible areas and give some challenges a seated version.
- Shy students: the teacher forms the groups so each includes at least one trusted classmate.
- Lower fitness level: groups may power walk between cones and split up reps.
Learning goals
- Stay active continuously by combining running and strength exercises.
- Navigate the space by following a search order.
- Cooperate in small groups to solve physical and mental challenges.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colored cones: 12
- challenge cards: 12
- worksheets: 8
- pencil: 8
Teacher tip
Write each letter in a different color so you can quickly spot anyone skipping cones. Place strength challenges far from running ones to spread out the fatigue.
