First Day: A Challenge Circuit to Get to Know the Group
A four-station circuit for the start of the school year in which each physical challenge requires sharing personal information and teaming up with new classmates. It breaks the ice, builds a climate of trust and lets you see how the group organizes itself from day one.
How to play
- Form four groups of seven, mixing students who don't know each other, and explain the stations; each group stays together for the whole rotation (3 min).
- Station 1: the group lines up along a row of cones in birthday order without talking, using only gestures, then checks the result (5 min).
- Station 2: a passing record in a circle, saying the receiver's name; if the ball drops or a name is wrong, start over (5 min).
- Station 3: the group finds three things they have in common and creates an eight-count gesture that represents them (5 min).
- Station 4: each member names a sport or activity they enjoy and teaches one move from it; the group links them all into a sequence (5 min).
- Share-out: each group shows its station 3 gesture and its passing record and talks about what they learned about each other (7 min).
Rules
- No one has to share anything they don't want to; they can pick a different fact.
- No talking or writing at station 1, only gestures.
- Passes at station 2 are made from 10 to 13 feet away with a soft ball.
- Laughing is welcome; making fun of others is not.
Variations
Easier
Allow quiet talking at station 1 and use a bigger ball at station 2.
Standard
Four five-minute stations that combine a physical challenge with getting to know each other.
Harder
At station 2, add a second ball going the other way while still saying names.
Adaptations
- Autism: the student gets the station order in advance and can pick the personal fact to share from a list.
- Hearing impairment: at station 2, the passer points to the receiver and says their name facing them to make lip-reading easier.
- Limited mobility: the passing circle is arranged so the student can receive without moving, and at station 4 they teach an upper-body move.
Learning goals
- Get to know classmates and build a climate of trust at the start of the year.
- Coordinate with new people in simple movement challenges.
- Share personal interests and experiences while respecting others.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 16
- balls: 2
- stopwatch: 1
- worksheets: 4
Teacher tip
Make the groups yourself to split up friend groups. Note who stays on the edges: it will help you form teams over the next few weeks.
