Final Acrosport Showcase Scored With a Rubric
Each group performs its acrosport routine for the class and the teacher scores it with the familiar rubric; the audience scores one criterion and applauds every performance. It wraps up the unit in a respectful showcase atmosphere.
How to play
- Set up the mat stage, draw performance order, and review audience rules (5 min).
- Guided general warm-up and a run-through by group without music (8 min).
- Performances: each group performs its routine (about 2 minutes) and the teacher fills in the rubric. The audience scores only the "transitions" criterion on a card (24 min).
- Shout-out round: each group says one thing it liked about another specific group (5 min).
- Quick self-assessment: each student marks on their rubric the level they think they reached in safety and expression (3 min).
Rules
- The audience stays quiet during performances and applauds at the end of each one.
- If a figure doesn't work, the group calmly takes it down and moves on: no do-overs.
- Figures must be the ones in the revised script; nothing improvised in the showcase.
- Nobody points out mistakes out loud during the shout-out round.
Variations
Easier
Three-figure routine performed for the teacher and one other group only.
Standard
Full routine for the whole class.
Harder
Showcase open to another class, with the group introducing its routine before performing.
Adaptations
- Students with stage anxiety: can perform in the second half of the order or only for their buddy group, and their group can present a video recorded in class.
- Wheelchair user: their scripted role is scored like everyone else's on expression and cooperation.
- Last-minute injury: takes part as narrator or spotter, and the group adapts the affected figure with the teacher's OK.
Learning goals
- Perform an acrosport routine safely in front of an audience.
- Show varied figures, transitions and timing to music.
- Respectfully appreciate other groups' work.
Equipment for a class of 25
- gym mats: 16
- speaker: 1
- printed rubrics: 8
- pencils: 8
Teacher tip
Keep the printed rubrics in a folder, one sheet per group, and record the performances if school policy allows: it helps you score calmly. Nerves drop a lot when the order is drawn in front of everyone.
