Figure-Eight Long Rope: Jump and Cross
Two lines, one on each side of a long rope, take turns running in, jumping once, running out the far side, and looping around a turner to join the other line, tracing a figure eight. Students practice timing entries and exits, reading the rope, and keeping the group moving nonstop.
How to play
- Groups of 8 to 10 with a long rope; two turners, and everyone else in two lines behind two cones, about 6 feet diagonally from each turner (3 min).
- Run-through without jumping: the rope turns and each student runs under it right after it passes, without touching it, then loops around a turner (4 min).
- The figure eight: each student runs in, jumps once in the middle, and exits on a diagonal, then loops around the turner on the exit side and joins the other line (5 min).
- Continuous rhythm: someone enters on every turn, alternating lines, with no empty turns; count entries in a row (4 min).
- Challenge: beat the group's one-minute record, rotating turners every attempt (4 min).
Rules
- Enter right after the rope passes in front of your nose, on the side where it's coming down.
- Always exit on a diagonal to the opposite side, never backward.
- The cones mark the waiting spot; no cutting ahead.
- If someone steps on the rope, turning stops and restarts with the next jumper.
Variations
Easier
Leave one empty turn between entries and run through without jumping.
Standard
Figure eight with one jump in the middle and alternating entries with no empty turns.
Harder
Jump twice inside, or run out dribbling a ball handed off by the next classmate.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: in a wheelchair, do the figure eight by passing under the rope while it's turned high, with no jump.
- Visual impairment: the turner says "go" at the moment to enter and the line is marked with a rope on the floor.
- Fitness level: students who tire become turners or may skip one loop.
Learning goals
- Judge when to enter and exit a turning rope.
- Move smoothly along a figure-eight path.
- Help reach a group goal without breaking the rhythm.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 3
- cones: 6
Teacher tip
Turners make or break this activity: start with students who have good rhythm and ask for big, whole-arm turns. Counting entries out loud really motivates students and gets the whole group invested.
