Feel the Beat: Balloon Vibration Dance
Each student holds an inflated balloon between their hands to feel the vibrations of a hand drum and bass-heavy music, then changes how they move based on what they feel. It is a way to experience rhythm designed for Deaf students that enriches the whole class.
How to play
- Give each student an inflated balloon and explain that sound can be felt: the balloon carries vibrations to your hands (1 minute).
- Exploration (3 minutes): with the speaker on the floor playing music with a strong bass line, students move toward and away from it and share where they feel it most.
- Hand drum (4 minutes): slow beats, giant steps; fast beats, quick little steps; silence, freeze. First with eyes open, then closed.
- In pairs (4 minutes): one plays the drum next to the partner's balloon while the partner, eyes closed, moves to the vibration. Switch after 2 minutes.
- Mini routine (3 minutes): in groups of 4, students create four balloon moves that change when the vibration changes, then perform them.
Rules
- Do not squeeze or bite the balloons.
- Keep hold of your balloon while dancing.
- With eyes closed, take small steps and respect personal space.
- Moderate volume: the goal is to feel it, not blast it.
Variations
Easier
Only two rhythms, slow and fast, with eyes open.
Standard
Three drum responses, partner work, and a mini routine.
Harder
A fourth rhythm with accents that call for a jump, and routines with eyes closed.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student who uses a wheelchair responds with arms, torso, and head, with the balloon tied to the armrest.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: this student is the main focus and can teach the class to notice vibrations or lead the routine.
- Autism or sound sensitivity: low volume, a warning before each change, and the option to stay away from the speaker.
Learning goals
- Perceive rhythm through vibration.
- Adapt movement to different rhythms and pauses.
- Create an expressive sequence as a group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balloons: 30
- hand drum: 2
- speaker: 1

Teacher tip
Check for latex allergies and use latex-free balloons if needed. It works best on a wood floor with songs that have a clear bass line.
