Fast Break on Call: How Many Defend?
Trios fast-break the full court while the teacher calls out how many defenders come in to stop them, from zero to three. It works reading numbers, filling lanes and making decisions at speed.
How to play
- Explanation and full-court 3v0 filling all three lanes and finishing with a layup (4 min).
- Numbered rounds: as the trio crosses half court, the teacher calls zero to three, and that many defenders enter from the baseline (8 min).
- Break back: if the defense wins the ball, it attacks the other basket against two attackers getting back (8 min).
- Rotate groups and count baskets by advantage type (5 min).
Rules
- Defenders wait behind the baseline until the number is called.
- Attacks last ten seconds max.
- Exit along the sidelines afterward, never through the middle.
- After each attack, the trio joins the defenders' line.
Variations
Easier
Call only zero, one or two, and defenders walk in.
Standard
Zero to three defenders sprinting in.
Harder
Defenders start at the same time as the attack, and the number is called later, near the three-point line.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the teacher shows the number with raised fingers or cards.
- Wheelchair users: run the middle lane with more space, and opponents defend without entering their lane.
- Students with lower endurance: alternate one round attacking with one as referee or scorekeeper.
Learning goals
- Recognize numerical advantage or equality.
- Fill lanes on the fast break.
- Choose quickly between passing, attacking or waiting for support.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 4
- basketball hoops: 2
- pinnies: 15
Teacher tip
With 30 students, use two courts, each with two attack lines and one defense line. The usual mistake is all three attackers bunching in the middle, so mark the lanes with cones for the first rounds.
