Fabric in Motion: Dance Composition with Cloth
Students explore a large piece of fabric as an extension of the body, as a costume that transforms the character, and as a shared object held in tension, then compose a three-image sequence as a group. Students work on creativity, relating to an object, and stage composition.
How to play
- Each student with a 5-foot piece of fabric explores: tossing and catching it, spinning it, letting it float while traveling, and moving it like a wave (4 minutes).
- The fabric transforms: it becomes a cape, a veil, a river on the floor, or a sail, and the student changes the way they move for each one (3 minutes).
- In pairs, one piece of fabric held by both ends: pull, give, and turn to wrap and unwrap without letting go (3 minutes).
- Groups of 4 with 4 pieces of fabric compose a sequence of three images (for example, the sea, a storm, the calm) linked by 8-count transitions (6 minutes).
- Rehearse with music, making sure the fabric doesn't hide the bodies in the key images (3 minutes).
- Each group performs its piece for the class (3 minutes).
Rules
- Never cover another person's face or wrap fabric around their neck.
- No hard pulling in pairs: if someone feels off balance, they let go.
- Leave enough space for the fabric to float without brushing other groups.
- Fold the fabric and put it away at the end.
Variations
Easier
Work only on individual exploration and one group image.
Standard
A three-image sequence with transitions, solo work, and partner work.
Harder
Add a moment where the group joins all four pieces of fabric and moves them like one giant object.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student in a wheelchair can handle the fabric with their arms or be the center of a group image.
- Students with autism: offer soft textures and preview each phase of the activity.
- Shy students: using the fabric as a costume or veil lets them express themselves with less exposure.
Learning goals
- Explore the expressive possibilities of fabric in motion.
- Change the way you move depending on how the object is used.
- Compose a group stage sequence of linked images.
Equipment for a class of 25
- fabric pieces: 25
- music
- portable speaker: 1
Teacher tip
Light, brightly colored fabric works best; heavy fabric doesn't float. Remind students that still fabric can also make a powerful image.
