Eyes-Shut Rope Walk
In pairs, one child walks a rope on the floor with eyes closed, feeling it with their feet, while their partner holds their hand and guides them. Kids work on balance without vision, feeling through the feet, and trust in a partner.
How to play
- Lay out 10 ropes, straight or gently curved, spread apart. Pair up the kids, one pair per rope. Demonstrate with a child: they guide you by the hand while you walk the rope with eyes closed, barefoot if possible.
- Eyes open first: both walk the rope holding hands, noticing how it feels underfoot. 2 minutes.
- Eyes closed: the walker closes their eyes, and the guide holds their hand and walks alongside, saying "keep going" or "stop." Down and back. 3 minutes.
- Clap: switch roles. 3 minutes.
- New challenge: the guide only rests a hand on the walker's shoulder, no hand-holding. Switch roles halfway. 3 minutes.
- Closing circle: each child says one word about how it felt with eyes closed. 1 minute.
Rules
- Walk very slowly, one little step at a time.
- The guide never lets go or leads the walker toward other kids.
- If I want to open my eyes, I can.
- Talk softly so you can hear your partner.
Variations
Easier
Eyes open holding the teacher's hand, or eyes half closed.
Standard
Eyes closed holding the guide's hand on a straight rope.
Harder
Eyes closed with the guide's hand on the shoulder, on a curvy rope.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: be the guide, or trace the rope with a hand while seated.
- Low vision: this child can be a great guide; as a walker, use a thick rope and go barefoot.
- More skilled kids walk a curvy rope with no help; kids who need support keep their eyes open and watch the guide.
Learning goals
- Keep balance without using vision.
- Feel the rope through the soles of the feet.
- Trust a partner and take care of them.

Teacher tip
Never force anyone to close their eyes; some three-year-olds get scared, and looking up at the ceiling works fine. Barefoot, they feel the rope much better, if the floor allows it.
