Expedition with Limits: The Team Crosses with What Each Can Do
Teams of five cross the yard stepping only in hoops they pass forward while carrying balls without dropping them, and each member draws a card with a limit: no sight, no voice, no hands, one supporting leg, or no limit. The team only makes it if every role contributes what it can do.
How to play
- Hand out role cards and explain: carry 4 balls from one line to another 20 m away, stepping only inside hoops (3 min).
- Planning time: each team decides what everyone does based on their card (4 min).
- First crossing with the cards (8 min).
- Redraw cards and do a second crossing with one more ball (9 min).
- Reflection: what did each role bring? Who was essential? (6 min).
Rules
- If anyone steps outside a hoop, the whole team goes back one hoop, not to the start.
- The person with no sight is always guided by someone.
- The one-leg role may lean on a teammate at any time.
- No one mocks the limits: they're represented with respect.
Variations
Easier
More hoops and no one-leg role.
Standard
Five roles and four balls.
Harder
Time it; each team tries to beat its time by changing the plan.
Adaptations
- Students with a real disability: are not given a card simulating another disability without agreeing to it; they may choose their role or be the team strategist.
- Ankle injury: the one-leg role lets them move seated over the hoops or pass balls.
- Shy students: no-voice role or no-limit role, whichever they prefer.
Learning goals
- Cooperate toward a shared goal.
- Value each person's abilities.
- Plan and adjust a team strategy.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 12
- foam balls: 6
- blindfolds: 6
- role cards: 30
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Explain that simulating a limit for a few minutes isn't living with a disability: it's a way to think about the game, not to "know how it feels." Use flat spots if you have them; they slip less than hoops.
