Exercise Snacks: One-Minute Movement Breaks
A circuit of eight "exercise snacks," one-minute challenges using body weight, a chair, or a bench, to break up sitting time between study sessions. At the end, each student builds and tests a three-move combo for home.
How to play
- Eight stations in a circle: chair sit-to-stands, bench step-ups, push-ups on a chair braced against the wall, high knees, lunges, forearm plank on the bench, jumping jacks, and a wall sit (2 min).
- Groups of 3 per station: 1 minute of nonstop work at a pace where talking gets hard, then 30 seconds to rotate clockwise.
- At each rotation, students rate from 1 to 5 how easy it would be at home. Complete all 8 stations (12 min).
- Each student picks three snacks and designs a 3-minute break (2 min).
- Everyone tests their break at once; the whistle marks each minute (3 min).
- Wrap-up (1 min): breaking up sitting every 45-60 minutes with 2-3 minutes of movement boosts circulation, mood, and focus.
Rules
- Use chairs without wheels, braced against the wall.
- Work hard but keep form: knees in line with toes, neutral back.
- Safety: anyone with knee pain swaps lunges for glute bridges.
Variations
Easier
40-second stations with no jumping.
Standard
Eight one-minute stations and a final test of the personal break.
Harder
75-second stations, and the personal break is done twice in a row.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated versions (armrest presses, arm raises, rotations, shadow boxing).
- Shy students: may test their break in a corner with a partner.
- Fitness level: each station has a basic and an advanced level, like wall or floor push-ups.
Learning goals
- Understand exercise snacks as a way to cut sitting time.
- Perform body-weight and furniture-based exercises with good form.
- Design a personal movement break for studying.

Teacher tip
Point out that these work in street clothes, which makes them practical at home. Check that chairs and benches are stable.
