Everyday Posture Stations Challenge
At five stations, groups act out daily movements: carrying a backpack, sitting to study, picking something up, getting out of bed, and looking at a phone. One model does it wrong on purpose and the group corrects it.
How to play
- Set up five stations, each with a cue card, and form five groups of 5. Opening explanation (2 min).
- Backpack: adjust both straps, keep the weight close to the back, and walk 20 yards. Study: sit all the way back, feet flat, book raised to eye level.
- Floor: pick up a medicine ball by bending the knees. Bed: get up from the mat by rolling to the side and pushing with the arms. Phone: raise the screen to eye level.
- At each station, one model does the movement wrong on purpose; the group spots the errors and fixes them. Then everyone repeats the correct movement three times.
- If the group explains the cues well, the teacher stamps their station card. Rotate every 4 minutes (20 min).
- Wrap-up (2 min): each group picks the movement they did worst before the lesson.
Rules
- The medicine ball is 4 lb or less and is always lifted with the legs.
- Backpacks carry light loads: classroom books or clothing.
- Respect the model: we correct the movement, not the person.
Variations
Easier
The teacher points out the error at each station.
Standard
The group finds and corrects the model's error.
Harder
Each group invents a sixth station with another daily movement and teaches it to the class.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: adapt movements to the wheelchair, such as using a reacher or hanging the backpack on the chair.
- Shyness: skip being the model and help spot errors.
- Autism: a picture schedule of the stations and a heads-up before each rotation.
Learning goals
- Identify harmful postures in everyday movements.
- Apply posture cues in daily life.
- Analyze how posture habits affect back health.
Equipment for a class of 25
- backpacks: 5
- chairs: 5
- classroom desks: 2
- mats: 2
- medicine balls: 2
Teacher tip
The more exaggerated the model's error, the more students laugh and remember. Ask them to practice at home the movement they did worst.
