Everybody Touches: 4v4 Light Ball Volleyball
A 4v4 net game with a light ball where all four players on a team must touch the ball before sending it over, by catching and tossing or by passing. It gets the whole team involved and builds communication and passing to a teammate.
How to play
- Courts about 26×20 feet with a rope at 6 feet; teams of 4 in pinnies, with one light ball per court (2 min).
- Serve with a two-hand toss from the back; the receiving team must have all 4 players touch the ball before sending it over the rope.
- Players may catch and toss to a teammate, but the last touch, the one that crosses the rope, must be a set or a bump.
- A point is scored if the ball lands on the other side, or if the other team sends it over before everyone has touched it; a player holding the ball can't walk with it.
- Games last 4 min; on the whistle, each team moves to the next court to face a new opponent (4 games, 16 min).
- At the end, each team calls out its points and who made the best final touch (2 min).
Rules
- The player with the ball can't take steps: pass it from where you caught it.
- Call a teammate's name before passing to them.
- Don't grab the ball from a teammate or push to catch it.
- No player may touch the ball twice in the same rally.
Variations
Easier
Three touches from 3 different players are enough, and the last touch can also be a toss.
Standard
All 4 players touch, catching is allowed, and the last touch is a set or a bump.
Harder
Only the first touch may be caught; the rest must be volleyball touches.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays seated near the rope, and teammates pass the ball right into their hands.
- Shyness: the team must pass to that student first at least once per game.
- Highly skilled students: their touch must always be a volleyball touch, no catching.
Learning goals
- Make sure every team member is part of every play.
- Pass accurately to a teammate while calling their name.
- Begin using a set or bump as the final send.
Equipment for a class of 25
- light balls: 4
- long ropes: 3
- pinnies: 24
Teacher tip
Early on, lots of balls will drop because students rush: remind them the team that cooperates wins, not the one that hurries. It's a great step before 3-touch mini-volleyball.
