Estimate It, Measure It Playground Challenge
In groups of four, students rotate through five stations where they first estimate a distance, a time, or a number of jumps and then measure it for real. The group that gets closest earns the most points. Students practice measuring and judging space and time.
How to play
- Set up 5 stations with cones and give each group a recording sheet (4 min).
- Groups of 4. Method: each student estimates, the group agrees on a number, then measures with the tape, by counting, or with the stopwatch, and records the difference.
- Station 1: estimate the yards between two cones and check with the tape. Station 2: estimate how many two-foot jumps it takes to cross the court, then do it.
- Station 3: estimate a partner's time for 30 yards in seconds and time it. Station 4: throw a beanbag, estimate how far it landed, and measure it. Station 5: estimate the steps in one lap of the court and count them.
- Each group spends 3 minutes per station and rotates clockwise on the whistle (15 min).
- Class share: each group names its closest estimate and the trick it used (3 min). The smallest total difference wins.
Rules
- Take turns at the running and throwing stations.
- At the throwing station, nobody enters the landing area until the whole group has thrown.
- Rewind the tape measure slowly; never let it snap back.
Variations
Easier
Measure only in steps and jumps, without a tape, and compare who takes more.
Standard
Five stations with estimates, measuring tools, and finding the difference.
Harder
Convert all measurements to feet and inches or calculate average speed at the running station.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: time, measure, and estimate; on the lap, count wheel pushes.
- Students with autism or attention difficulties: a recording sheet with numbered steps and pictures of each station.
- Fitness level: at the running station, each student chooses to estimate their time running or speed-walking.
Learning goals
- Estimate distances, times, and amounts before measuring them.
- Use a tape measure and a stopwatch independently.
- Set a group accuracy goal and check whether they reach it.
