End-of-Year Water Day Stations
Four cool-off stations for hot days where teams carry water with sponges, leaky cups and human chains to fill their bottles. Students practice moving with objects, coordination and teamwork in a festive end-of-year atmosphere.
How to play
- Ask families ahead of time for a change of clothes, sunscreen and a hat; make 4 teams of 6 or 7, each with an empty bottle (2 min).
- Station 1, sponge relay: soak the sponge in a bucket, run 10 yards and squeeze it into the team's big cup.
- Station 2, leaky cup: carry a cup with holes, covering them with your fingers, to the team bottle.
- Station 3, over-the-head chain: in a line, pass a full cup back over your heads, and the last student pours it into the bottle.
- Station 4, sponge target: throw wet sponges at a chalk target on the wall from 3 m.
- Each station lasts 5 minutes, and teams rotate on the whistle (20 min); at the end (3 min) compare the bottles and water a plant or the school garden with what is left.
Rules
- Run only in the marked dry zone, never through puddles.
- Sponges are thrown at the target, never at people.
- Nobody gets anyone wet without permission.
- Drink from the fountain, not the buckets.
Variations
Easier
Shorten the distances and use cups without holes.
Standard
Four 5-minute stations with the goal of filling the bottle.
Harder
Fill the bottle within a target time and do the chain with backs to the bottle.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: starts the chain or throws at the target from a wheelchair, with a dry zone around them.
- Autism: give a heads-up about the water and offer the target station, where the student can choose to stay dry.
- Lower fitness: walk the relay without penalty.
Learning goals
- Carry objects and liquids while coordinating movement.
- Cooperate as a team toward a shared goal.
- Enjoy play and manage emotions in a festive atmosphere.

Teacher tip
Pick a surface that is not slippery when wet and away from building doors. Reuse the leftover water for plants and talk about not wasting it.
