Electric Fence Team Crossing
The whole group must cross over a taut rope at knee or thigh height without touching it and without breaking physical contact between members. Students practice planning, helping each other and taking responsibility for a partner's safety.
How to play
- Make 3 groups of 8. Each group ties a rope between two tall cones or posts about 20 inches off the floor and lays mats on the landing side (2 min).
- Explain the task: everyone crosses over, without touching the rope, without going under it, and always keeping one hand in contact with a teammate (1 min).
- Two-minute planning: the group decides the order and how it will help the first students and the last two, who have the hardest job.
- Six-minute attempt. If someone touches the rope or contact is broken, that student and the one before go back to the start side.
- If they finish early, raise the rope 4 inches and repeat with a new order.
- Two-minute debrief: who led, what help made the difference, and whether anyone felt unsafe.
Rules
- Always cross feet first; no diving or jumping headfirst.
- Students may help by holding hands and waist, but no one is lifted above waist height.
- The rope may not be touched, not even by clothing.
- Safety: two spotters stand on each side of the student crossing.
Variations
Easier
Rope at 16 inches, and each student may break contact once.
Standard
Rope at 20 inches, constant contact and a penalty for touches.
Harder
Rope at 28 inches, and half the group crosses with eyes closed.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: lower one section of rope, or the student crosses through a gap marked with cones while the group keeps contact.
- Shyness or touch sensitivity: allow contact through a scarf held between hands.
- Fitness: a student who can't lift the leg high uses a low bench as a step.
Learning goals
- Design a safe group strategy to get past an obstacle.
- Offer and ask for physical help responsibly.
- Put personal and group safety ahead of speed.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 3
- cones: 6
- mats: 6
Teacher tip
Personally supervise the last two crossings and never allow anyone to be carried. If a group rushes, give it a mandatory extra minute of planning.
