Eight-Count Mitt Combos to Music
Partners fit punch combos into eight-count musical phrases and build a four-block cardio boxing routine. Students work on rhythm, coordination, movement memory and teamwork to perform their routine at the end.
How to play
- Play a song around 125 beats per minute and have the class march while counting eight beats out loud (2 min).
- Block A (3 min): 1-2 on counts 1 and 2, hold on 3-4, repeat on 5-8; the holder taps the beat with the mitts.
- Block B (3 min): four alternating hooks on 1-4 and two squats on 5-8.
- Blocks C and D (6 min): each pair creates two eight-count blocks that include at least one slip.
- Rehearsal (5 min): link A-B-C-D twice in a row, switching roles between run-throughs.
- Showcase (5 min): pairs perform in groups of four pairs at a time and classmates give one suggestion.
Rules
- Punch on the beat, not harder: 50% power is plenty.
- The holder keeps the mitts at shoulder height.
- Pairs stay ten feet apart from other pairs.
- Respect every pair during the showcase.
Variations
Easier
Use only blocks A and B and repeat them.
Standard
A four-block routine with two blocks created by the pair.
Harder
Raise the music to 135 beats per minute and the holder changes position in every block.
Adaptations
- For limited mobility, perform seated and swap squats for overhead arm raises.
- For students who are deaf or hard of hearing, the teacher shows the counts with fingers and the holder nods on count 1.
- For shy students, everyone performs at once instead of taking turns.
Learning goals
- Match punches and footwork to the musical tempo.
- Create and memorize eight-count blocks.
- Work with a partner to perform a routine.
Equipment for a class of 25
- focus mitts (pairs): 13
- foam gloves (pairs): 13
- music: 1
Teacher tip
Choose instrumental music or school-appropriate songs with a strong beat. Many students rush the count, so have them count out loud during the first rehearsal.
